Introduction

Using the command "remoteon" from any Linux login computer in Fine Hall you can access your GNOME or KDE desktop. This program uses VNC as it's backbone. In order to see your Linux Desktop from anywhere in the world you only need an Internet connection, and a JAVA enhanced web browser or the native VNC client. The VNC client can be downloaded for free from:

http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html

            d - Change Desktop Size

            s - Start Remote Session

            e - End Remote Session

Current Windows Manager: gnome
Current Desktop Size: 1024x768
Current HTTP Access: Remote Session Off
Current VNC Server: Remote Session Off

Option:

3. Now Press 's' and enter to start your remote session. The session will now start. A new screen telling you how to connect to the server will come up. It will look like this:

NOTE: If you have never used this program before it will ask you to set a
password password. We suggest you enter your Unix password, but any will be
fine.
The system is now ready to receive your remote connection.

T here are two ways to connect to remotely to your X-Windows Desktop.

1. You can connect with a VNC client downloaded from

    http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

When connecting with the VNC client your VNC server is:

    Math.Princeton.EDU:2

2. You can open a web browser and go to the following url:

    http://Math.Princeton.EDU:5802

PLEASE REMEMBER TO END YOUR REMOTE SESSION!
-=Press the 'ENTER' or 'RETURN' key to continue=-

4. You are now ready to connect. If you are running the VNC Viewer program enter the VNC server. It will now prompt you for the password you set. If you are running a web browser just enter the URL in the "location" line of your web browser and it will download and run the JAVA applet. The JAVA applet will ask for the password you just set. Do not close your ssh connection to the server until you are done with your remote session. Closing you ssh connection will end your remote session. Any unsaved work will be lost!

5. When you are ready to disconnect you can either select "q" from the main menu, or just end you SSH connection to the server. Please make sure all your work is saved first!

NOTES:

The remote desktop works MUCH faster if you use solid colors in your GNOME or KDE desktop, and with background pictures.

Other Options:

This covers the other menu options on the main menu.

NOTE: If you have a "Remote Session" you must end it, and restart it for these options to take effect.
